Caregiver Guide

When dementia begins to affect a person’s ability to communicate, both people with dementia and their caregivers can get upset and frustrated. Learning new ways to communicate, both both verbally and nonverbally, is helpful as the dementia progresses.

After reviewing this Caregiver Guide, you will:

  • Understand common barriers to communication
  • Understand the communication challenges in each stage of dementia
  • Gain strategies for talking and listening to someone with dementia
  • Recognize the types and the importance of non-verbal communication
  • Feel more confident in your ability to communicate with a person with dementia

Video clips in the Caregiver Guide are used with permission from the professional training DVD “Accepting the Challenge,” produced by the Alzheimers North Carolina, Inc. More information is provided at the end of the guide.
