Barriers to Communication

Dementia can affect communication in two major ways:

  • It affects the way the person with dementia interprets information
  • It affects they way the person expresses him or herself

In the early stages of dementia, people may have trouble finding the words they want to use or may be unable to remember things that are familiar to them. As the disease progresses, many people have increased difficulties with reading, talking, and following along with conversation or while watching television. Communication problems that were initially just minor inconveniences become much more severe and difficult in the later stages of dementia as language and conversation become more greatly compromised.
